5 Tips To Improve Your Sex Life

Tip #1 Hydrate

Why Hydration? Because we have erectile tissue that needs blood flow. When you stay hydrated your blood volume increases and opens up your arteries and veins. Although drinking water will not cause sexual arousal, being hydrated will help ensure any efforts to becoming aroused are not in vain.

For men, their erectile tissue is located in the penis and for women it is located in the bulb of the clitoris and bulbs of the vestibule. The bulbs of the vestibule are located on either side of the vaginal opening under the labia. If you can optimize blood getting there it will help optimize your sexual experience. Why wouldn’t you do it?

Take home lesson. Stay hydrated regularly and especially before sexual activity.

Tip #2 Exercise

Why Exercise? Blood flow! There are a lot of arteries and veins in the pelvic cavity and we want to optimize the circulatory system to get the blood where we need it. Regular exercise, cardio and weights are helpful for optimizing the muscles of the heart and circulatory system. If circulation is poor it will be difficult to get and maintain an erection, a common problem for men. Ladies we rely on blood flow as well for cushion and fuel to the muscles of the pelvic floor to help us achieve that wonderful orgasm.

Another reason exercise is important is for stamina. There is nothing worse than getting into a good rhythm with your partner and having to stop because you have no cardio or your legs burn out. Having sex requires the use of many muscles that can cause fatigue, cramping or burn out. Getting regular exercise optimizes how long you can go for before these things happen.

Take home message… get regular exercise 20-30 minutes daily to improve your stamina.

Tip #3 Stress Management

Why Stress Management? Blood flow! Yes here it is again.

When you are stressed, whether about hitting deadlines, having enough money to fund something, being stuck in traffic, dealing with a conflict in your life, the brain is wired to respond the same way it would to a saber-tooth tiger chasing you. When you are stressed the brain goes into survival mode.

It activates our fight or flight system. Once this system is activated it releases hormones and chemicals into the body to prepare for a fight. This re-directs blood flow from non-essential activities…like digestion and reproduction. When facing danger, these things are not important. That means blood flow is redirected to the arms and legs to prepare for running or fighting and less blood flow is available for activities such as sex.

Not only are you not getting enough blood but when you are stressed your muscles are tense as well. When it comes to sexual pleasure, an orgasm is the rhythmic contraction of the pelvic floor muscles. It is going to be difficult to have rhythmic contractions when your muscles are already tight. This can mean a weak orgasm, no orgasm and sometimes that dreaded premature ejaculation.

Take away message 3; reduce stress to keep blood flowing to pleasure zones and your muscles relaxed to receive pleasure.

Tip #4 Pelvic Floor Exercises

Why Pelvic floor exercise? Blood flow, strength, endurance and flexibility. The pelvic floor muscles play an important role in sexual pleasure, which includes helping to trap blood in the erectile tissue and orgasm. When you train these muscles, it optimizes them to perform better. You may know these exercises as “Kegels.”

Kegels are more than just squeezing as hard as you can. A proper kegel looks more like how a jellyfish moves in water. First it expands then squeezes. Similarly our pelvic floor muscles need to relax then squeeze.

Additionally the pelvic floor muscles do not work in isolation of the core. The pelvic floor is part of the core and being able to include these muscles in your regular core routine can help.

Take away message 4; exercise the pelvic floor muscles to optimize your sex life over time.

Tip #5 See a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist

As pelvic floor physiotherapists we undergo additional training outside of university to provide this service. We are trained to assess and treat the pelvic floor muscles via internal examination through the vagina or rectum. This allows us to see if your muscles are tight, weak or both. We can then teach you how to exercise these muscles and provide you direct feedback.
